While pursuing his journalism degree at Western Michigan University, he wrote for the schools newspaper and anchored the afternoon news for the student-run radio station. Upon graduating from WMU Ross attended Spec's Howard School for Broadcast arts to perfect his craft. Following internships at Greater Media and Metro Networks, he got his first full-time gig in Big Rapids, as the news director for a group of stations. Here he got to try his hand at producing commercials, on-air shifts, and play-by-play sports. After two years in BR he took a position as news director in Lansing, where he helped his station win the Michigan Association of Broadcasters 2008 Investigative story of the year.
